In this PodcAstroholic we answered the question “Why is the solar corona hotter than the surface of the Sun?”
I got a scolding (or a scalding since we are talking about how hot the solar corona is :p ) by two solar physicist colleagues Dr. Maria Desi Espuig and Dr. Will Ball about this podcast as I got something wrong, and I made the entire thing sound a lot simpler and as though it were a solved issue.
The mechanism behind the coronal heating is still a problem. There are several proposed mechanisms for how it works but astronomers are not sure which one really contributes to the coronal heating, if not several of them.
In the podcast, I talk about a specific mechanism which might seem promising but has some big question marks associated with it. If the heating is episodic (depending on the internal solar activity) how can the temperature of the corona be so constant?
Maria and Will suggested this excellent review on the Corona heating problem. In the future, I will write another, more in-depth blog post about it.
